This project absolutely requires the purchase of a grinding mechanism, and it also demands that the mechanism fit superbly in the wooden body and cap to work well. I never feel like using this pepper mill now that I have the IKEA one. by Ernie Conover Over the last forty years, I have turned a good many pepper mills using a variety of grinding mechanisms. I have a fancier widely recommended pepper mill, the Unicorn Magnum 6", but it's annoying to use with the leaking pepper grinds and its annoying loading hole cover that is loose and easy to accidentally turn. The best part of this IKEA spice mill is that it's only $7! I love this thing so much that I give it as a housewarming present to friends (in addition to the very nice ZEROJAPAN Bee House salt box). I hate having the grinding end on the bottom and having pepper grinds leak onto the table or having to keep track of a tray which also gets littered with pepper grinds. It's not precise but it's very comfy and ergonomic to use and the grinding end is on top of the device when you leave it on your counter/table. If you're not particular with the precision of the grind, I really recommend the IKEA spice mill:
